Associate Professor of English Ayse Papatya Bucak鈥檚 latest book 鈥淭he Trojan War Museum, and Other Stories鈥 was listed in Oprah Magazine鈥檚 鈥10 August Books You Should Read Right Now鈥 list for August 2019. Bucak鈥檚 collection includes 10 stories that explore the author鈥檚 Turkish roots. 鈥淭he History of Girls,鈥 centers around a group of girls trapped in the rubble of a school explosion who are visited by the ghosts of their dead classmates, 鈥淎 Cautionary Tale鈥 is the story of a Turkish wrestler, and 鈥淭he Dead鈥 is about a sponge magnate鈥檚 encounter with a survivor of the Armenian genocide. Publishers Weekly commented 鈥淭he author astutely deploys a range of styles and techniques that create a cerebral, multifarious collection. Bucak鈥檚 remarkable, inventive and humane debut marks her as a writer to watch.鈥

Bucak has published prose and poetry in a variety of magazines, including听The Kenyon Review, Creative Nonfiction, Prairie Schooner, Pank, and听The Fairy Tale Review. Her short fiction has been awarded the O.Henry and Pushcart Prizes, and she has held residencies at the Millay Colony for the Arts, Hedgebrook Farm, Willapa Bay AIR, Brush Creek, the Betsy Hotel, and the Studios of Key West.听 She is a contributing editor for the journal听. Bucak is the subject of the first In Conversation podcast produced by the College of Arts and Letters, which will be released on Tuesday, Sept. 13, 2019.听Dean Michael Horswell, Ph.D., talks to Bucak about her new book and about how growing up in the United States with Turkish heritage has inspired her to write stories with elements from Turkey鈥檚 culture and history, but from her American point of view.
